AIPMT: Basic Information

The AIPMT exam is conducted by the CBSE. This exam is conducted for the sole purpose of selecting medical college entrants to various medical colleges in the country, based on the 15% seats set aside by each medical college for the All-India quota. The CBSE has the sole resposibility for the conduct of the exam itself. This is an important point to remember, when you consider the fact that students who are coming out of CBSE schools are solidly outranking students who are from schools that follow the ICSE or state syllabi.

The AIPMT consists of a preliminary examination and a final examination. The preliminary examination consists of a 200 question MCQ test which includes questions from Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. The answer sheets are computer scored, which preserves the integrity of the AIPMT, with minimal possibility of any human interference in the conduct of the exam.

The final exam , which is conducted only in a few select centres consists of a 120 question MCQ test which includes questions from Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology.

THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE FOR THE AIPMT

Needless to say, AIPMT is the world's most difficult examination. Millions and millions of students all over India participate in this exam, for a chance to win a seat out of the miniscule number of medical college seats available. When you compare the cost of a medical college seat at one of the commercial private medical colleges, where the price tag may run anywher from 25- 50 lakhs in capitation fee , plus a annual fee which can run anywhere from 4 lakhs to 8 lakhs, you understand the desperation of the students and the seriousness of the competition.

There are thousands of books supposedly helping you prepare for the AIPMT, and also thousand of tutorial colleges and tuition centers and parallel colleges and what not, all promising candidates the sun and the moon and the stars.

There is a methodology to preparing for the AIPMT. And this preparation starts not in 12th standard, or even 11th standard. The preparation starts in 8th standard.

THE RULES FOR SUCCESS IN THE AIPMT

Be the top scorer in your class for Physics, Botany, Zoology and Chemistry in classes 8-12

Start preparing notes FOR the entrance examination. You will be surprised at how many questions pop up in the exam which have their roots in standard 8 and 9 textbooks.

The CBSE is the board that conducts the AIPMT, and naturally CBSE students have an edge, but do not forget for a moment that ICSE text books for standards 8, 9 and 10 standards are way advanced than CBSE books and hence these should also be utilized in those grades.

The AIPMT preliminary exam consists of 200 questions, which includes 4 subjects. Botany and Zoology together can include upto half the questions that show up in the exam and are often neglected by candidates. Botany and Zoology are tricky in that the materials to be studied is vast, but the study points that are actually relevant for the exam is not that vast. The problem is how to separate these relevant and important facts to be studied from the millions of pages of Biological knowledge that has accumulated over the millenium.

You must select your study tools properly. You need at least one AIPMT study guide which contains previous years questions papers. Any of the standard MCQ books is sufficient.

You should also consider using a comprehensive software such as the ENTRANCE TOPPER software for Botany and for Zoology. Each one of these contains around 4000 multiple choice questions, with detailed explanations, altogether an astounding 8000 questions in all. These products are fairly expensive, each one costs Rs 4000, but when you consider the 25-50 lakh price tag for a medical college seat, these prices are fairly irrelevant. Unlike the multiple choice books available on the market which mainly contain old questions stolen from old question papers, the ENTRANCE TOPPER software is a concerted effort to teach every single teaching point in Botany and Zoology. The team that worked on this project finally ran out of questions to create, that is how extensive this is. Buy both of these softwares now, and use them through out your 11th and 12th standards, to make sure that your Botany and Zoology preparation is flawless. Similar products are being prepared for Physics and Chemistry also, these are expected to be available in two years, since it takes a concerted mammoth effort to create something of this magnitude.

AIPMT: The Application Process

It would be wise to keep in mind that there is an upper age limit as well to participate in these exams. You should be less than 25 years of age to be eligible for the AIMPT. Another issue to consider is that if you are a domiciled in Andhra Pradesh or Jammu and Kashmir, you are not eligible for the AIPMT.

To apply for the AIPMT, visit the official AIPMT website aipmt.nic.in and fill in the online application form. Remember to note down the application number. Payment can be made with either demand draft or a credit card. At this point be sure to print out the confirmation page and send it by post to CBSE. The website has three links, one link is for the online application, the second link is for making payment and the third link is to print out the confirmation page. Print out multiple copies of the confirmation page, send only one copy to the CBSE, keep the other copies with you. The AIPMT has mercifully instituted facilitation centres at various locations to help students who are not computer savvy.

The completed application must be sent by registered post to The Deputy Secretary (AIPMT Unit), CBSE, Shiksha Kendra, 2, Community Centre, Preet Vihar, Delhi 110301. The AIPMT specifically advises not to use any courier services, but speedpost is acceptable. Be aware of last dates for the application process.
